Since it began in 2010, 6 people have completed the Gap Year Program in Youth Ministry. Here 3 of them share a little of their experience.
I volunteered for the Gap Year Program because I wanted to learn what youth ministry is and experience it firsthand. I wanted to volunteer because I wanted to take a break from studying, take time to discern my vocation and spend time and energy at the service of the Lord and of the Church - and the Gap Year program helped me achieve all these three!
I was able to grow in knowledge and I have acquired a lot of useful skills - which I may not have learned if I just spent this whole year working full-time. I went to many places and met many new friends. I was able to see the Church up close and (a bit of) how its many members work. During this Gap Year I was also given the opportunity to participate in the Diocesan Youth Ministry Council - and I learned a lot from the discussions that happened during the meetings I attended.
The Gap Year is an experience you don’t want to miss out on - it is an opportunity I am glad I took, and one that I will never forget!
The Gap Year Program is very unique and I don’t think I would ever experience something completely like it. It came at a perfect time in my life where I am looking for ways to grow in my faith. The flexibility of the program allowed me to still work and support myself and save up for uni, as well as complete a Certificate. It helped me network with great people who I wouldn’t have met otherwise.
I have learnt that to be an effective leader, I should be able to listen to the people I am leading, take the time to get to know them and make them feel cared for, and that’s the only way that I can inspire them.
I have gained more confidence in witnessing to God’s work in my life and sharing this with others, to people that I do not know, and especially to my non-Catholic friends.
The year has been imperfectly perfect and I am so glad that I did it. A challenging, slightly crazy and very fruitful year.
I did the Gap Year Program because I'd heard great things from Jaz and Dean, and I believed it would help me grow in faith and as a person.
I hoped to grow my people skills, and a better understanding of the Catholic Church and how it is involved in my life. I've definitely learned how to work with people and how to cooperate, and I feel that I've also learned how I can be more involved in the Church.
I feel my faith has deepened. This was really evident to me in the build-up to Break Away, during the planning and preparation because I was really aware of the guidance of God along that path.
The Gap Program has helped me to unlock my own faith; thus letting me share that energy with others. I've not only grown spiritually but I've grown as a person. Absolutely loved every milli-second of it!!
